Swollen face
  • I. Facial swelling or puffiness is often caused by acute chronic nephritis. In its early stage, eyelid swelling and ankle swelling may occur first. When severe, the whole body may swell, not just the face. Whooping cough, thoracic mediastinal tumors, aortic aneurysms, long-term use of adrenal hormones and decreased adrenal function may occasionally cause facial swelling.

  • II. Occasional swelling of sections of the face include swelling of one side or sometimes both sides of the face. The most common cause is facial trauma. Facial swelling is often accompanied by bruises and pain. Other causes include: inflammation of a salivary gland, parotitis (in children), periodontal disease, urticaria, or facial swelling and pain.
