Usually when the upper gastrointestinal tract is bleeding, such as bleeding from the stomach and duodenum, the stools are ink-like black because the blood loses its red color after being oxidized by gastric acid and becomes black. However, if the bleeding is heavy, in addition to vomiting blood, it is possible to relieve a large amount of dark red stools. If you take a lot of iron, you may have dark gray stools. If you eat a lot of animal blood, such as pig blood and chicken blood, you may also have black stools. The most common source of bleeding from the digestive tract is the anus and rectum. The most common cause are hemorrhoids, with bright red blood. Others causes include anal fissures, proctitis, colitis, rectal cancer, etc. Colorectal cancer may cause bloody stools that can be distinguished by the naked eye on the left side, but bloody stools are rarely seen on the right side or early stage cancer. A fecal occult blood test must be used to determine the source of bleeding.
